Okay, so I got my new Killswitch Engage album in the mail on Saturday. After flailing around and freaking out and staring at the album packet for a little while, I finally listened.

I ordered the special edition that includes one bonus song and three live songs (as well as a too-short but hilarious behind-the-scenes DVD. It said it was supposed to be over 30 mins of footage, but it was only 24 minutes...?!). Thank GOD, because the album went by so quick, and I just kind of dropped my jaw at the end, like....That was it? I mean, there are only 12 new songs...but still. O_o

That wasn't the only depressing thing about it; there's a noticeable less faster-paced selection of songs (KsE are my mosh friends, wtf.), the lyrical content is dark, and ADAM DIDN'T SING BACKUP VOCALS ON THIS AT ALL WTFFFFF!?!

So after listening this the whole way through in my dark room, concentrating on only the song as best I could... I was left feeling a little annoyed and just kind of sad. I felt a little ripped off, really. The lyrics were the saddening part. They made me feel a little bit hopeless. Thanks, Howard. I'm more used to the Killswitch anthems that make you feel empowered and provoke hope. There's one or two of those on the album, and there's only so many songs that you can sing about "do something with your life!!!"
KsE has stated that they touched on darker subjects with the lyrics, and boy, did they.

Despite all of this, I really am liking the album quite a bit.
I would have been annoyed if Killswitch stuck to their typical, face-melting delivery with all of the songs blending together, I guess. It's weird, because people would give them shit for remaining the same, and they'd give them even MORE shit for this, because it's different. You can say it's more pop, but KsE have always had radio friendly choruses. That's why they're easy to get into.

The album is definitely worth a listen. Killswitch delivers the powerful choruses and the mosh as usual, but with a different, more mature twist. Howard sings a lot more and shows off his amazing ability. It has the KsE trademark but it's not the same at all. If you haven't listened to the band before, just get this album. Or at least download In a Dead World
